Elastomers, rubbers, biomaterials, and thermoplastics typically exhibit permanent deformation due to prolonged applied loads. This behavior can critically affect the function of a component and is often encountered in gasket or sealing applications. Applied strain level, time compressed, and temperature can all significantly influence the compression set of a material. The compression set tests can then be used in a material model calibration using MCalibration® for finite element simulations.
Veryst typically uses ASTM standard D395 to test the permanent deformation of rubbers, though custom test programs are available. The figure above shows an image of a compression set fixture that Veryst uses to test elastomers and thermoplastics.
