Soft actuators webinar

Modeling Soft Actuators and Devices

Free, One-hour Webinar

Soft actuators are devices comprised of compliant materials that change shape due to electrical, mechanical, thermal, magnetic, or other stimuli.  In contrast to rigid robots and actuators, soft actuators achieve functionality through large deformation.  Their inherent compliance, while being key to enabling functionality, often renders the relationship between input stimulus and actuator response highly nonlinear.  Finite element analysis can be a powerful tool that accelerates the design and optimization of soft actuators, while minimizing the number of experiments that need to be performed and prototypes that need to be built.

In this webinar we will go over examples of how informed finite element modeling of soft actuators can effectively unravel the nonlinear relationship between input stimulus and device functionality, explain nonlinear phenomena, and tackle multiphysics problems which are notoriously challenging to address experimentally.

Course Instructor

Dr. Nikolaos Vasios is a Senior Engineer at Veryst Engineering.  Dr. Vasios has expertise in the numerical modeling and finite element analysis of nonlinear solids and structures, with a specific focus on metamaterials and soft robotic applications.  His research, primarily driven by computational tools, combines numerical methods, analytical solutions, and experiments for the inverse design and optimization of diverse products, including mechanical metamaterials and soft robots.

Dr. Vasios has extensive finite element analysis experience and was one of the first worldwide recipients of the Abaqus Structural Analysis Associate certification by Dassault Systèmes.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Understand how finite element modeling of soft actuators can inform the relationship between an input stimulus and the response.
  • Identify key ingredients of a good finite element model that are necessary to capture the important physics governing the behavior of certain soft actuators.
  • Use computational modeling to optimize rapidly the design and functionality of your soft actuators
