Interfacial Stress and Delamination in Layered Structures

Interfacial Stress and Delamination in Layered Structures

Free, One-hour Webinar

Delamination at interfaces is a common failure mode encountered by engineers responsible for designing and manufacturing systems that rely on bonding between dissimilar materials.  This free, one-hour webinar will introduce the mechanics of interfacial stress and delamination in layered structures, with the goal of helping engineers better predict and prevent delamination failures.  We will survey the sources and basic characteristics of mechanical stress at interfaces as well as introduce the practical experimental, analytical, and computational approaches available for analyzing delamination failures.

Course Instructor

Dr. Mark Oliver is a Principal at Veryst Engineering.  Dr. Oliver has expertise in the materials science, solid mechanics, and failure analysis of metals, polymers, fiber-reinforced composites, adhesives, and additively manufactured materials.  He is experienced in chemical and microstructural characterization, mechanical testing, and finite element analysis, applying his knowledge to issues of materials selection, mechanical design, and root cause determination of material failures.

Learning Objectives

The goal of this webinar is to equip engineers with the mechanics fundamentals needed to predict and prevent delamination failures more effectively.  By the end of the class, you will have an improved understanding of:

  • the sources and characteristics of stress at material interfaces
  • the basic approaches for predicting delamination failure
  • how finite element analysis (FEA) can help analyze delamination problems
  • the types of mechanical tests used to characterize interface strength and toughness
