Dr. Matthew Hancock and Dr. Joseph Barakat presented the keynote address at COMSOL Day: Pharmaceutical Applications 2023, with a presentation titled "Simulation of Lipid Nanoparticle Self-Assembly for mRNA Vaccine Production."
Lipid nanoparticle (LNP) self-assembly is a key step in mRNA vaccine production. LNP self-assembly involves multiple substeps, including charge neutralization of the mRNA by ionizable lipids, aggregation, and subsequent encapsulation of the mRNA by neutral and PEGylated lipids. Simulation of LNP production can greatly expedite the development of processes and devices, whether the LNP production occurs in turbulent flow for production-scale applications or in microfluidic flow for small-batch applications. In this talk, Dr. Hancock and Dr. Barakat outlined approaches for using the COMSOL Multiphysics software to model the coupled micromixing and self-assembly processes involved in LNP production and discussed how these models can be used to guide process and design decisions.
This free, online event, took place March 9, 2023, 11:00 am–4:00 pm EST, with Dr. Hancock's and Dr. Barakat's presentation at 2:00pm.
