Dr. Stuart Brown provided insight in an article titled “The Hunt for Invisible Damage,” published in Digital Engineering 24/7. The article focused on metal fatigue fracture on the interior part of an engine fan blade, where it is invisible and undetectable when looking at it from the outside. So how do airlines prevent in-service failures? Properly timed physical inspections are essential, and simulation software can help the inspection process. “Each inspection method has its own strengths and weaknesses. You can use simulation to check the performance of different methods, to determine which one is best suited for the type of crack or engine part you’re inspecting,” according to Dr. Brown. Read the full article here.
